Oil change interval for engine cleanout?

Due to a combination of factors, the xB didn't get an oil change for almost 7,000 miles, on a 5,000 recommended interval. I bought 2 filters & plan to do a shorter interval change to help flush out any gunk in there.

What is a good interval to help clean out any ick from having gone too long(engine has 217K so it also could generally use the cleanout)?

1,000 miles? Few-hundred miles? X number of hours driving plus immediate oil change?

Just change it and go on your way. I would use a synthetic at that mileage though due to valve guide wear (common in Toyota I4's of that era) but stay away from high mileage oils

Have you looked under the valve covers? Is there any actual gunk or ick? How do you know it needs a cleanout? Many many many vehicles go 7500 or 10000 miles on an oil change without imploding. What's really bad is to run it low/out of oil. As long as that didn't happen, just change the oil like regular and get back on your interval. Not a big deal.

I don't know if it's necessary, but I'd probably say 500 miles with the engine up to full operating temp.

Then drain the oil hot.

just curious, what is bad about high mileage oils? I've put some in my jeep, but that is pretty immune to oil type.

Yeah I seriously wouldn't even worry about it. If its a synthetic bled or full synthetic 7000 miles aint no thang.

High mileage oils have additives that are designed to swell the seals to reduce oil leaks. This sounds great except that when you stop using it, it shrinks the seals and the leaks are worse. The best plan to keep seals lasting the longest is to stick with conventional oils and deal with the small leaks. Its like a band aid, only instead of aiding in the healing, it accelerates seal wear.

I wouldn't worry about it, highly unlikely you accumulated any "junk." Just got back to 5,000 mile intervals.

There is a minor amount of black buildup, which is why I figured this wouldn't be a bad idea.

sometimes you are better off to just leave it alone. Breaking all the gunk free has resulted in plugged oil passages elsewhere...

IMO I'd dump half a can of seafoam in the old oil, drive like 30-50 miles, then change the oil. Use a good filter and you'll be golden.
